Articulation

These stories have been published by The Beacon News, Aurora, Illinois, a Hollinger Press newspaper. This is the unedited copy I e-mailed in.

I generated these from my own contacts. I have well over 1,000 bylined stories on almost every topic imaginable.

Awakenings... the story of survival and renewal for artists suffering with mental illness.

Janette Maley and her husband Arthur Hand are artists who have made related bodies of artwork dealing with issues brought on by Janette's struggle with and survival of breast cancer. The pair now tour the country with their art and give talks and workshops in the hopes of helping others. Janette shares with me for one of my weekly ArtWorks columns published every Saturday.

The following stories were assignments from my editors in the newsroom.

Architect Bruce Goff’s Round House turns 50. The celebrated architect, likened by some to Frank Lloyd Wright, created an infamously sphereical structure to live in. This is perhaps my favorite story. Read it to find out why.

Award-winning illustrator Wendell Minor created an acrylic painting which was enlarged to mural size for his high school alma mater’s entrance hall. These three stories are an example of many series I have done combining features with hard news and sidebars. First we get to know who Wendell Minor is, then we look into the technical aspect of how a modestly sized painting was transformed to cover a wall, and finally we go to the public celebration to unveil the work, written on deadline.
